Mayura Torii produit des peintures reconnaissables avant d’être vues parce que venues de la mode vestimentaire. Elle en fait la métonymie d’un groupe et de ses usages en même temps qu’une pseudo abstraction géométrique. Elle confond les codes de reconnaissance culturelle et les ramène sur le même plan sans hiérarchie. Elle assimile le regard sur l’art à une identification de groupe, comme il y en a autour des marques vestimentaires. La place de la peinture n’est-elle plus que celle d’un objet ready-made dans un décor ? Garde-t-elle la moindre chance d’apparaître, alors qu’elle est glacée par le prêt-à-penser ? Peut-elle se frayer un chemin entre des codes totalisant ?

Mayura Torii’s paintings are recognizable before they are even seen, as they draw from the world of fashion. They become metonymies of social groups and their habits, while also evoking a kind of geometric pseudo-abstraction. By blending visual codes of cultural recognition, she levels hierarchies and confuses the systems of value that separate “high” from “low.” Her work likens the gaze on art to forms of group identification, as with clothing brands. Is the painting’s place today no more than that of a ready-made object within a décor ? Can it still emerge, while frozen within the ready-to-think ? Can it find a path through these totalizing codes ?
